Welcome to Checkers Online, which is run by one person. By using the site or creating an account, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site.

Your account

• You must be at least 13 years old to create an account.
• Give accurate information, and keep your password and recovery code private. You are responsible for what happens on your account.
• Please use one account per person.

Guest play

You can play against the computer as a guest without making an account. Guests can’t play online or appear on the leaderboard, and a guest’s record and game history are not saved anywhere. They are erased when you close the tab or refresh the page. These terms still apply to guests.

Playing fair and being kind

Please don’t:

• use bots, scripts or outside programs to play for you or to get an unfair edge;
• try to break, overload, probe or get into parts of the site or other people’s accounts;
• use usernames, avatars or messages that are hateful, harassing, sexual, illegal or that pretend to be someone else;
• use extra accounts to manipulate ratings or the leaderboard.

Moderation

I can warn you, change or remove a username or avatar, reset ratings, or suspend or permanently ban an account, at my discretion and with or without notice, if I think these terms are being broken or the site or other players are being harmed.

Online play and ratings

Leaving a rated game counts as a loss. Games can be affected by connection problems, updates or downtime, and I can’t promise that a game, rating or record will always be kept or can be undone.

Your content

You keep ownership of the usernames, avatars and messages you submit. You allow me to store and display them as needed to run the site, and to use ideas and suggestions you send me without owing you anything.

Donations

Donations are optional gifts to help with the cost of running the site. They don’t buy features, special treatment or any ownership, and they are handled by a separate payment service with its own terms.

No guarantees

The site is provided “as is” and “as available”. It runs on a small budget, so it may be slow, change, go offline, or lose data without warning. I don’t promise it will be error-free or always available.

Limit of liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, I’m not responsible for any loss or damage that comes from using the site or from not being able to use it, including lost games, ratings, accounts or data.

Changes

I may update these terms from time to time. The date above shows the latest version. If you keep using the site after a change, you accept the new terms.

Privacy Policy

This explains what information Checkers Online collects, why, and what you can do about it. The site is a small project run by one person.

What I collect

• Account details: your username, email address, avatar color or picture, and your password. Your password and recovery code are stored only as scrambled (hashed) values, so I can’t read them.
• Game data: your ratings, win/loss/draw record, game history, and the moves of your online games.
• Messages you send me: anything you submit through the About page, along with your username (if you’re signed in) and your IP address.
• Technical data: your IP address is used to limit abuse and spam, and to keep you signed in I use a session cookie.
• Moderation records: if an account is banned, I keep a note of the reason.

Guests

If you play as a guest, no account is created and your guest games, record and history are not sent to or stored on my servers. They exist only in your browser tab’s memory and are erased when you close the tab or refresh the page. Like any website, the site still sees your IP address when you visit.

Cookies and your device

When you sign in to an account, the site uses one essential cookie to keep you signed in. It lasts up to 14 days, or less if you don’t visit for 7 days, and is removed when you sign out. Guests don’t get this cookie. There are no advertising or tracking cookies and no analytics. Your display settings (sound, theme and so on) are saved on your own device.

How I use it

• To run the site: accounts, sign-in, matchmaking, ratings and the leaderboard.
• To keep the site safe and fair, and to enforce the Terms.
• To read and respond to feedback.

I don’t sell your information, show ads, or send marketing emails.

What other people can see

Other players can see your username, avatar, rating and record, and the games you play against them. Your email address and password are never shown to other players.

Services that help run the site

• A hosting provider and database provider store and serve the site’s data.
• Google Fonts supplies the site’s heading font, so your browser contacts Google, which can see your IP address.
• Cloudflare Turnstile may be used to check that sign-ups and sign-ins are done by a person.
• An email service may be used to deliver messages you send through the About page to me.

These services have their own privacy policies. I may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect the site and its users.

How long I keep it

I keep your account data until you delete your account. You can delete it yourself from your profile, which removes your account, sign-ins and records tied to it. Messages you sent through the About page may be kept after that.

Security

I take reasonable steps to protect your data, such as hashing passwords. No website is perfectly secure, so please use a password you don’t use anywhere else.

Children

This website isn’t meant for children under 13. Please don’t create an account if you are under 13. If I learn that an account belongs to a child under 13, I will delete it.

Changes

I may update this policy. The date above shows the latest version.
